The traveling exhibition 'ENERGY THAT IS ALL AROUND: Mission School' featured formative work by artists — Chris Johanson, Margaret Kilgallen, Alicia McCarthy, Barry McGee and Ruby Neri — who began their careers in the early 90s in San Francisco’s Mission district and, by 2002, had been identified and hailed as key members of the so-called Mission School.

Rather than an inclusive survey, ENERGY was an unprecedented view of an art movement that has garnered cult-like status over the last two decades by looking closely at shared formal concerns in the painting and studio practice of these five artists — showcasing over 130 works and an artist ephemera section of invitations, posters, photographs, letters, artist books, and other historic materials. An illustrated catalog accompanied the exhibition.

As Creative Strategist / Assistant Curator, I worked closely with Curator Natasha Boas to present this acclaimed exhibition from ideation to execution. And a big thanks to the wonderful teams at the Walter + McBean Galleries and Grey Art Gallery who were vital in its organization.
